Funding Global Research and Technology Advancement with ALABC Membership

Gopher Resource joined the Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium (ALABC) in early 2014. The international research organization helps maximize research and development dollars by pooling resources from member organizations. In its 20-year existence, the consortium has invested over $60 million in pioneering programs aimed at enhancing the performance of lead batteries, which provide environmental superiority over other battery types.

The ALABC is at the forefront of electric car battery technology and a variety of energy storage applications. The chemistry of lead batteries has been proven for more than 140 years and delivers huge benefits. Lead batteries provide the best value for power and energy per kilowatt-hour, have the longest life cycle, and are the most environmentally friendly because they are recycled at an extraordinarily high rate. (Lead batteries are the world’s most recycled consumer product and the lead in lead batteries can be recycled an infinite number of times).

Advanced Lead-Acid Batteries

  • 10% fuel consumption saving for start-stop vehicles using lead batteries1
  • 25 billion kg CO2 equivalent saved by 2020 through vehicles with advanced lead batteries2
  • Production requires only 15% of the energy required for lithium-ion batteries and releases 75% less greenhouse gas2
  • More resistant to factors which shorten battery life, such as corrosion, overcharging, gassing, water usage and self-discharge

We share the ALABC’s mission to:

  • Enhance the capabilities of the lead battery in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), start/stop automotive systems, remote area power supply (RAPS) systems, renewable energy and grid storage applications, and stationary and telecommunication backup systems
  • Fund support into creating emerging concepts, technologies and applications for advanced lead batteries
  • Accelerate progress with real-world demonstration projects
